The Complete Size Guide

Never guess again —
your complete baby clothing size guide
You've found the cutest outfit. You're ready to buy. And then — the panic sets in. What size does a 4-month-old actually wear? If the baby was born early, do you go smaller? If they're on the bigger side, do you skip a size? And if you're buying a gift, how are you supposed to know any of this?
You're not alone. Baby clothing sizing is one of the most confusing parts of shopping for little ones — even for parents who've done it before. Sizes vary by brand, weight matters as much as age, and babies have a frustrating habit of outgrowing things before they even get to wear them.
This guide is here to fix all of that. We're breaking down everything you need to know about baby and toddler clothing sizes — so whether you're a new parent building out a wardrobe or a friend shopping for a baby shower, you'll always get it right.
At Danny & Sarah, every order comes with a free size exchange card — so if you're gifting and get the size slightly wrong, the family can swap with zero hassle. When in doubt, size up.

| 4T | 4 years | 39–42 in | 34–38 lb | Some kids skip to 4/4T from 3T |

| 6 | 6 years | 45–48 in | 43–48 lb | Upper range of Danny & Sarah sizing |
A "3-month" size is not necessarily for a 3-month-old. It's the size most 3-month-olds fit — but every baby grows differently. Always prioritize weight and height over age when you know them. When you don't, size up.
The golden rules of baby sizing
After helping thousands of parents and gift-givers find the right fit, we've landed on a handful of rules that hold true almost every single time.
1. When in doubt, size up
Babies grow fast — almost cartoonishly fast. An outfit that fits perfectly today might not fit in three weeks. A size up means more time to wear it, more value for the money, and no heartbreak over a cute piece that was never worn. The only exception is newborn — some babies are born big and skip it entirely, while others wear it for a month. If you don't know the baby's birth weight, 0–3 months is the safer gift size.
2. Weight matters more than age
If you know the baby's current weight, use that over age every time. A 4-month-old who weighs 18 pounds is likely already in 9-month clothes. A 6-month-old who weighs 14 pounds is probably still in 3–6 month sizes. When in doubt, check the weight column in the tables above.
3. The 3–6 month rule for gifting
If you're buying for a baby shower and have no idea what size to get, 3–6 months is your safest bet. Here's why — newborn sizes are tiny and short-lived. 0–3 months goes fast. But 3–6 months gives a nice long runway, and most baby shower gifts arrive before the baby even wears that size. You'll look like you planned it perfectly.
4. For toddlers, 3T is the gifting sweet spot
Just as 3–6 months is the safe baby gift size, 3T is the toddler equivalent. It covers most 2.5- to 4-year-olds, wears for a long time, and has enough room to layer in cooler months. If a child is on the bigger or taller side, go straight to 4T.
5. Rompers and bodysuits run differently
One-piece styles — rompers, bodysuits, and onesies — run smaller than separates because they have to fit both the torso and the diaper. Size up one size on rompers compared to what you'd buy in a top or pants. This is especially true for chunky babies with big thighs (the cutest problem).
We've built every part of our shopping experience around taking the guesswork out of sizing — because we know it's the #1 thing that stops people from finishing a purchase.
Sizing for specific situations
Shopping for a baby shower when you don't know the due date
Buy 3–6 months or 6–12 months. Avoid newborn entirely. Babies spend the least amount of time in newborn sizes — and many parents receive so many newborn items that they never get through them all. A 6–12 month size might feel big, but it's a gift that actually gets worn and appreciated.
Shopping for twins
Twins often arrive early and stay smaller for longer, especially if they're premature. When buying for twins, consider going one size smaller than you normally would for a singleton — and check if the family knows their birth weights before purchasing.
Shopping for a growing toddler
Toddlers between 18 months and 3 years are in a sizing no-man's-land — some brands do 18–24 months, others go straight to 2T. At Danny & Sarah, we carry both. If a toddler is already in 2T and growing fast, gift 3T. You simply can't go wrong sizing up for a toddler.
Shopping for a baby born in a different season
A baby born in November will be in 3–6 months by February and 6–12 months by summer. Think about what season they'll be in that size, not just the size itself. A 3–6 month summer romper bought as a winter baby shower gift is perfect — the baby will be in that size right when summer hits.
-
✓Due in winter? Buy spring/summer sizes in 3–6 or 6–12 months as gifts — that's when they'll be worn.
-
✓Due in summer? Buy cozy fall pieces in 3–6 months — babies are often in that size right as the weather turns.
-
✓Don't know the due date? 6–12 months is genuinely universal — it works in almost every season and every timeline.
A final word on brand sizing
Baby clothing sizes are not standardized across brands. A 6-month size at one brand might fit like a 9-month size at another. At Danny & Sarah, we include real measurements — in both inches and centimeters — on every product page so you always know exactly what you're getting. No guessing from the tag alone.
If you're ever unsure, our team is available to help you find the right size before you order. And remember — every order ships with a free size exchange card, so even if you're slightly off, it's never a problem.
When you're sending a Danny & Sarah gift, mention in your card that the size exchange is included. Parents love knowing they can swap — and it makes your gift feel even more thoughtful and stress-free.
